The Coastal Bend area of South Texas encompassing San Patricio and Aransas counties as well as Corpus Christi has had Red Book telephone directories since 1961. In the intervening 51 years, many things have changed. The entire population of San Patricio and Aransas counties barely topped 12,000 people in 1961 and was largely rural. Today, Portland alone has 16,000 plus people.
When Weedie Lewis first published Red Book Directories in 1961, they were designed to look local. They included sports team information and schedules, maps, government pages and had large type since the area was also a haven for older “Winter Texans.” This influx of new faces, also known as “Snow Birds,” adds thousands to the area’s population from late October until April of each year. Rockport has grown into an upscale report in this half century period. Portland, Ingleside, Aransas Pass and surrounding towns have exploded in population, too. There are over 90,000 residents in these two counties today.
